Earlier this year mindyourmind was selected as one of the partners for the Federal government’s Canada Service Corps initiative alongside 4H Canada, Apathy is Boring, Boys & Girls Club of Canada, Canadian Wildlife Federation, Chantiers jeunesse, Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, Katimavik, OceanWise and YMCA. We will be going to five different communities in Canada to co-create mental health resources with youth, and what we create will be customized to each city.
Our first stop was beautiful Squamish, British Columbia. The mindyourmind team was able to explore the community a bit before we met with the youth, we were able to take a ride on the Sea to Sky Gondola. This gave us a great view of the city and also allowed us to take a short hike on the Chief (the most notable mountain in Squamish). Following that we had a weekend design studio at the end of April and have been meeting weekly for webinars ever since. We are pleased to report that we’ve got a lot accomplished! We’ve had some technical difficulties along the way but it’s been a really enjoyable experience overall. We’ve been able to get to know each other better while creating the resource.
As of right now we have a logo for our project. From this we were able to decide on a colour scheme (think natural colours). This allowed us to consider what the website will look like and how it will be laid out. Additionally we developed the overall structure for the game (it’s going to revolve around skiing and mountain climbing) as well as content themes and we’ve also developed the first draft of questions.
In future webinars we will continue to work on the content of the resource as well as promotion techniques. The government is providing grant money for youth led projects so we might apply for a grant to help with a possible launch event.
This project is shaping up to be super cool! Check back for updates and follow Leaders Today for news about the Canada Service Corps as a whole.
