Earlier this year mindyourmind was selected as one of the partners for the Federal government’s Canada Service Corps initiative alongside 4H Canada, Apathy is Boring, Boys & Girls Club of Canada, Canadian Wildlife Federation, Chantiers jeunesse, Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, Katimavik, OceanWise and YMCA. We will be going to five different communities in Canada to co-create mental health resources with youth, and what we create will be customized to each city.
If you want to know more check out last months update.
June was a busy month for our team! We started planning the event. We decided we want to host two health fairs at two schools; one at Howe Sound and one at Don Ross. We will invite other community services, clubs and mental health advocates to have tables at the fair, they will each have activities at their table. We will also have a table to promote our resource, MIND. There will be food and lot’s of fun swag! We have been in talks with the principals at both of the schools and are hoping to have the health fairs in October.
We also had the opportunity to meet with Christiane Fox Deputy Minister, Intergovernmental Affairs and Youth, Privy Council Office. We were able to tell her about our project and she is very interested in what we are doing. She also asked the team what we thought about youth service programs; the barriers faced and the opportunities that are possible because of them. She will bring this information back to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The information the youth shared will be used to shape the national youth service initiative that will be implemented in 2019/2020.
With summer in full swing we decided to take a break from the webinars for a few weeks, so that our team can work on different aspects of the project, while also having some downtime. During our last webinar, we took time to break into teams so that we can be ready for the health fair in the fall. There were four teams; the promotional team, the evaluation team, the school outreach team and the grant writing team. We have one meeting scheduled for the end of July, another meeting scheduled for the end of August and a few planned for September. Stay tuned and follow our project, there are lots of exciting developments to come!
